The station will have an advanced ice accumulation system, allowing for the production of cooling energy during off-peak hours to be distributed at a later time and will have two large ice deposits with a total capacity of 80,000 kWh. This will allow the system to meet peak demand over the coming years.
Construction on the new station began in March at the corner of Tànger and Roc Boronat Streets, at the heart of the
22@Barcelona district, and is scheduled to finish in summer 2011.
Technological innovation, integration with its surroundings and commitment to the environment are made clear in this project through its advanced ice accumulation system and reuse of the 36-m brick smokestack from the old Ca l'Aranyó textile factory, which the plant will use for the combustion gas from their boilers.
22@Barcelona district centralized public heating and cooling system The centralized heating and cooling system implemented in the 22@Barcelona district is more sustainable, affordable and efficient than conventional systems because it combines the generation of heating and cooling with specific new technologies to reduce energy loss. The system installed in 22@Barcelona allows for reductions in both expenditure and in CO2 emissions. It is 40% more energy efficient than traditional mechanisms, allowing for a savings of more than 10% on costs, and makes better use of space inside buildings.
The system is based on a plant that generates heating and cooling through alternative energy sources, gas and/or electricity, which is then distributed to surrounding buildings through a network of hot and cold water conducts.
This system was put in place for the Forum 2004, when the first centralized heating and cooling plant was built, to serve the buildings around the Forum area. In March 2005, the 22@Barcelona municipal company adjudicated the concession of this centralized heating and cooling system in the Poblenou – 22@ area to
Districlima in a public tender. This company continues to roll out this service in the district.
Thanks to this heating and cooling system in 22@Barcelona, the city of Barcelona was awarded the Best Practices Award for Climate in 2006 in the “Ecotechnology” category. This award is given out by the
Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) through the
Spanish Network of Cities for Climate.
