On 20 November, Linguamón – House of Languages opened the Visitors’ Centre at the Can Ricart site. The new space will enable the public to get to know the essence of this large complex devoted to the world of languages, which will open to the public in 2012.

The opening ceremony was under the presidency of the Vice President of the Catalan Government and Chairman of the Linguamón – House of Languages consortium, Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira, accompanied by the First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Carles Martí, and the director of Linguamón – House of Languages, Antoni Mir.

Can Ricart, a new cultural, business and technological centre
The House of Languages will be located in the 22@Barcelona district and will occupy the buildings of the old Can Ricart factory: one of the first mechanical cotton printing factories in Catalonia and a historic benchmark in the industrialisation of Barcelona.
Linguamón has the support of the Poblenou Residents’ Association, which brings together 1,000 residents in the suburb. The association, which has been fighting for years to preserve the former industrial site of Can Ricart, has classed the project as innovative and forward-thinking.

The new complex will devote more than 2,000 m2 to exhibitions on languages, it will have multi-purpose spaces for training and activities, educational services, services for multilingualism, an auditorium, a media library and a restaurant-shop. It will also offer an extensive cultural programme on languages.

Linguamón, international benchmark in the management of multilingualism
Linguamón is the first institution in the world devoted to the dissemination of linguistic diversity and to fostering language-based initiatives among the general public and specialist services for multilingualism management. It is a local project with an international vocation, the aim of which is to promote linguistic diversity among both specialists and the general public.

Linguamón – House of Languages seeks to contribute towards making Catalonia an international benchmark in multilingualism management. Its aims, therefore, are to have an impact on international discourse and agendas on the basis of permanent collaboration and networking with other organisations.

To mark the opening of the Visitors’ Centre, arranged tours for groups will be offered as of January through the following e-mail: info@linguamon.cat
