FROM 1986 TO 1999: PROGRESSIVE REFURBISHMENT
The recovery of Poblenou started off with the interventions carried out around the Olympic Games. Due to this celebration, the ring roads of Barcelona were built, providing Poblenou with an excellent link to the metropolitan area, the port and airport; the beaches were turned into urban ground and the Vila Olímpica was built up, constituting the first residential neighbourhood of Barcelona coastline. In February 1999 the last stretch of Diagonal Avenue was opened. This involved Poblenou to be linked to Barcelona downtown by means of the business core of the city. This new perspective triggered an interested public debate about the future of the 200 hectares of industrial land of Poblenou yet to be refurbished. The discussion ended up with the approval, in July 2000, of the Ammended Metropolitan Master Plan for the refurbishment of industrial areas of Poblenou, better known as 22@ Plan, unanimously by every political parties represented in the consistory.
