Jordi William Carnes, deputy mayor of Economic Promotion and the Treasury and new president of 22@Barcelona, reports on the innovation district to the plenary council, supporting new urban-planning, economic, social and cultural stimulus for the project.
The deputy mayor of Economic Promotion and the Treasury and president of 22@Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes, presented, during the latest Plenary Council, a report on 22@Barcelona’s future prospects. In his presentation, Jordi William Carnes stressed the three challenges and objectives he has posed for the coming years: • Urban-planning stimulus, to broaden territorial-planning development, urban-planning management and quality service infrastructures.
• Economic stimulus, to consolidate the 22@ clusters (Media, ICT, Medical Technologies and Energy) by attracting and establishing companies and science/tech institutions, providing specific spaces for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises, implementing a landing program for international companies and entrepreneurs and building housing for university students and researchers.
• Social and cultural stimulus, including a significant increase in social housing, more public green areas, a plan for mobility and public transport, facilities, services and cultural spaces.
The third deputy mayor of Barcelona and president of 22@Barcelona cited knowledge as "one of the key factors to Barcelona’s development and a strategic commitment on behalf of the city."
In his report before the Plenary Council he also evaluated the work undertaken so far, which has resulted in 60.87% of the square meters of ceiling from the approved planning and 67.26 million euros in investments to implement the Special Infrastructure Plan linked to the innovation district.
Currently, there are 114 protected elements in this area (in December 2003 there were 36). Also, there are 1,316 protected residences currently underway, with 2,249 scheduled to be finished by 2010, as well as 18,566 square meters of residential facilities and 78,325 square meters of other facilities.
Right now there are 925 companies in the 22@Barcelona district, 47.01% of which have been newly created.
