On July 19, 22@Barcelona, with collaboration from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), organized the latest edition of the .22@Update Breakfast..

BARCELONA BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH PARK, REFERENCE POINT FOR THE 22@BARCELONA MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY CLUSTER (TECMED).

JORDI CAMÍ, DIRECTOR OF THE BARCELONA BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH PARK: .BARCELONA IS A CITY THAT IS KNOWN FOR ITS HISTORY AND EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL RESEARCH..

The event, which was presided over by the Manager of 22@Barcelona, Pere Fons, highlighted Barcelona as .a city known for its history and excellence in the clinical research sector.. .This city gives us the opportunity to create a critical mass that allows us to be visible., explained the PRBB Project Manager, Reimund Fickert.

Also participating in the event were the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park General Director, Jordi Camí, who reflected on the challenges facing the biomedical community when it comes to putting discoveries made in laboratories into practice in clinics in order to diagnose diseases and treat patients.

According to Camí, .a lot of information generated in laboratories isn.t put into practice.. Also, Camí explained that changes have been made in the academic research sector. So, after only a few years, universities are offering new degrees and creating new organization and training schemes for hospitals. This is causing universities to have to .deal with joint training of doctors and biologists., Camí confirmed.

Moreover, according to the General Director of the PRBB, one of the other problems that exist is that .in this sector new machines and technologies are being developed which are very expensive and have a very high obsolescence rate.. Lastly, globalization of the sector is occurring due to mobility and working online, in addition to the confirmed internationalization of scientific activity.

PRBB Growth
As a part of the .Innovator of the Month. program PRBB Project Manager, Reimund Fickert, pointed out the large growth experienced in recent years by the PRBB, which concentrates six independent research centers and creates synergies among them to aid in collaboration. .From 2003 to 2006 PRBB went from 400 to 1,000 people working in R&D and doubled investments from 23 to 53 million., Fickert explained.

To finish up, the Manager of 22@Barcelona, Pere Fons, presented the news in the 22@Barcelona district. He highlighted the growth of the Association of Businesses and Institutions 22@Network, which now has 53 members, as well as the social projects being developed in collaboration with the Sant Martí district. These projects include a computer-lending scheme between 22@Barcelona businesses and the district organizations, internships for students with businesses in the innovation district and the successful initiative .Virtual Memory of the Elderly., which has recovered the district.s historical memory and brought both young people and the elderly closer to new technologies.
