FROM 1700 TO 1860: BACKGROUNDS
San Martín de Provenzales was a stand-alone municipality of Barcelona until 1897, when it was added to the Barcelonés town council, together with Sans, Gracia, las Corts, San Gervasio and San Andrés, which also took their jurisdictional autonomy.
Before the attachment, San Martín was a few urbanized territory with an important establishment of factories and industries linked to the textile sector. In the 18th Century in San Martín there were already present some industries of the Spanish returning from America due to the availability of land and natural resources. In the 19th Century, the Barcelona’s bleaching industries moved massively into San Martín grounds, more numerous and cheaper.
